RECAP
Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KO’s) surprisingly dominated Cristian Mijares (36-4-2, 15 KO’s) en route to a 9th round KO victory to unify the WBA/WBC/IBF 115 pound titles.
Darchinyan looked fresher and quicker as soon as the opening bell sounded, landing with his powerful left hand at will, and scoring a knockdown from a left uppercut towards the end of the opening round.
Darchinyan continued to land sharp combinations as the fight progressed and his defense was unexpectedly excellent.
Darchinyan landed a big left hand towards the end of the 9th round that sent Mijares down and out, becoming the first fighter to stop Mijares.
With the victory, Darchinyan becomes the first fighter in history to hold the WBA/WBC/IBF titles simultaneously.
Co-Feature
2004 US Olympic Bronze medalist Andre Dirrell (17-0, 12 KO’s) dominated Russian Victor Oganov (28-2, 28 KO’s) scoring a 6th round TKO in a super middleweight fight in the evening’s co-feature. With this victory, Dirrell becomes a mandatory challenger for WBO world titleholder Denis Inkin.
Dirrell used superior hand speed and better skills to outland his opponent from the start. Oganov chased Direll throughout the fight and was peppered with jabs and caught with numerous power punches for his efforts. Official time of the stoppage was :28 seconds of the 6th round.
The fight did come with some controversy. In the 3rd round, Oganov landed two consecutive low blows that sent Dirrell to the canvas. Rather than giving Dirrell time to recover from the illegal punched, referee Ray Corona urged him to get up immediately and fight.
The time of the stoppage was questioned by may as well. Although Dirrell appeared to be well on his way to a definitive victory, Oganov did not appear to be in any trouble when the fight was halted.
