Beverly Hills – Former 2 time lightweight titleholder Julio Diaz (35-4, 26 KO’s) scored a fifth round TKO over the previously undefeated David Torres (20-1, 13 KO’s) wednesday night in the main event of a fight card at the Playboy Mansion.
The fight was billed as a lightweight bout. However, Diaz came in at 139Lbs, 4 rounds over the lightweight limit and 1 pound over the contracted weight of 138 pounds. He was fined by the California boxing commission for his failure to make weight.
Diaz was in control against the overmatched Torres throughout, scoring a knockdown in round 3 when a bodyshot sent Torres reeling into the ropes. In round 5, Diaz hit Torres with a left hook putting his opponent down to a knee. It was initially ruled a slip, but upon looking at the swelling taking place on Torres’ face, the referee called the fight.
In the evening’s co-feature, super middleweight prospect Henry Buchanan (17-1, 12 KO’s) TKO’d Brian Norman (16-2, 11 KO’s) at 1:02 of the 9th round with a devastating right uppercut. The referee stopped the fight immediately.
The fight was a rematch a 2004 fight that Buchanan won via 4th round KO. Norman outworked Buchanan for the first two rounds of the bout, but Buchanan took over from the 3rd round onward and was in complete control until finishing his opponent off in round 9.
In a 4 round swing bout, super middleweight Jason Peterson(2-0, 1 KO’s) of San Francisco, California won a shutout unanimous decision against the game the game Andy Zerger (0-4, 0 KO’s) of Wichita, Kansas. All 3 judges saw the bout 40-36. The Boxing Herald scored the fight 40-36 for Peterson.
In another 4 rounder, middleweight Alejandro Bogarin (8-5, 2 KO’s) won a 4 round split decision over Joel Mills (4-3, 1 KO) in a battle of California based fighters. Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 for Bogarin and 39-37 for mills. The Boxing Herald scored the fight a draw at 39-39.
